Is Lead-Free Ammo as Reliable as Standard Ammo? What an Independent Test Found

It is the first question people ask us, and it is the right one. Ammunition that does not go bang is worthless, no matter how clean it burns. The honest answer: yes, with a caveat we will get to, and there is independent data behind it rather than just our word.

Where the doubt comes from

The skepticism is earned. Early non-toxic primer compounds, developed to replace lead styphnate in the 1990s, had real problems: harder ignition in some firearms, shorter shelf life, and more sensitivity to heat and moisture than the lead-based chemistry they replaced. Shooters who tried that first generation and got light strikes have not forgotten it, and they should not have to take a marketing claim on faith.

What changed is time. Lead-free primers have been widely used in military and law enforcement indoor training for years, and Federal, CCI, and Winchester all sell non-toxic training loads. The chemistry stopped being experimental a long time ago. That does not mean every lead-free load runs in every gun, which is a point we come back to at the end.

What is actually lead-free in our ammunition

This matters, and plenty of brands are vague about it. Our 9mm uses a lead-free primer, so there is no lead styphnate going airborne at ignition. The projectile is a total metal jacket: a lead core completely enclosed in copper, front and back, so nothing is stripped off the base by hot gas as the round leaves the barrel.

That is deliberate. A fully lead-free projectile is a different animal ballistically, costs more, and behaves less like the FMJ you have trained on for years. Encapsulating the core instead removes the two lead sources that reach the shooter's air at the firing line while keeping the round's behavior familiar. That is what Least-Lead-Exposure™ means: less lead where you are breathing, not a claim that every atom of lead has left the cartridge.

The independent test

In December 2025, Graham Baates of GBGuns Depot tested our 115gr 9mm. We sent him ammunition. The test, the data, and the conclusions are his.

He ran it through five firearms spanning the practical range of 9mm barrel lengths:

  • 3" SAR 9 SC Gen 3, standing in for micro compacts and single stacks
  • 4" Fusion Firearms / Ermox XP Pro, the SAAMI standard barrel length
  • 4.25" Grand Power Q100, chosen so results could be compared against the 23 loads in his 9mm Range Ammunition Guide
  • 5" Bersa M2XI, the long end of common handgun barrels
  • 11.15" Century Arms Draco 9S, to see maximum energy from the load

Conditions were recorded: 300 feet elevation, 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Velocity and standard deviation were measured for every firearm. Watch the test below; the written review with the full data charts is linked under the results.

What the numbers showed

Two findings matter for anyone deciding whether to trust the round.

Energy landed in normal range-ammo territory. Measured against his existing data set, our load produced energy comparable to Blazer Aluminum and Remington Range. Velocities were what you would expect from a 115gr load, and the small spread between the 3" and 4" barrels indicates a fast-burning powder that is close to fully burned by the end of a short barrel. In plain terms: it shoots and recoils like the range ammo you already use, which is the entire point.

Consistency was the surprise. Velocity standard deviation is the honest measure of how uniformly a batch is loaded. Ours came in similar to TulAmmo and Federal Syntech. Baates had flagged our recycled brass as a legitimate risk before firing a shot, since mixed brass sources can produce inconsistent results, so this was the number he expected to be worst. It was not, and he said so.

His verdict on the price premium was that it is "cheap insurance" for shooting indoors or running a ported gun. We did not write that line, and it is a fair way to think about the trade.

Frequently asked questions

Is lead-free primer technology experimental?

No. Non-toxic primer compounds have been in commercial and military training ammunition for decades and are sold by the major manufacturers. The first generation had ignition and shelf-life problems, which is where the reputation comes from, but the chemistry has been mature for years.

Does lead-free ammo shoot differently than standard ammo?

Ours is not meant to. Because we use a conventional lead core sealed inside a copper jacket rather than a solid copper projectile, weight and ballistics stay in the normal range for a 115gr load. Independent testing put velocity and energy in line with common range ammunition. Fully lead-free projectiles, which are a different product, can behave differently.

Is EcoBullet ammunition completely lead-free?

No. The primer is lead-free, and the lead core is fully encapsulated in the jacket. That removes the lead that would otherwise reach your air at the firing line. It does not eliminate lead downrange in the backstop.

Does lead-free ammunition have a shorter shelf life?

Not with current chemistry, under normal storage. Store it cool and dry like any ammunition, and it will behave like any ammunition.

Can I use it at an indoor range?

That is what it is built for. Indoor bays concentrate whatever is in the air, and ported handguns direct gas and particulate back toward the shooter. Those are the two situations where the primer choice matters most. It supplements good ventilation and cleaning, not a replacement for either.

Has the 124gr load been independently tested?

Not yet. The published independent test covers our 115gr TMJ. The 124gr uses the same primer and the same total metal jacket construction, so it's technically largely the same. When a 124gr test is published, it goes on this page.
